Santa Pola is the closest point of the Peninsula to Tabarca, the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, located just 3 miles from the Cape. From the port of Santa Pola, boats depart throughout the year to the island, declared a national historical site in 1964.
Tabarca is a unique place that captivates with its history, reminding us that it inspired artists and attracted pirates. In fact, to end piracy, the island was fortified and populated by inhabitants of the island of Tabarqah (Tabarka) located in Tunisia. From this period (18th century) remain the walls, the gates of San Gabriel, San Miguel and San Rafael, the defensive tower of San José, the Governor's House and the Church. At the eastern end of the island is the lighthouse, from the 19th century.
It is also a true marine paradise (recognized in 1986 as the first marine reserve in the country ) with crystal clear waters and spectacular fauna and flora that will delight diving lovers. The coastline is jagged, formed by small cliffs a few meters high, with pebble beaches and a single sandy beach with transparent waters.
